Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, generally known as the Appalachian Trail or simply the AT, is a marked hiking trail in the eastern United States extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The path is maintained by 30 trail clubs and multiple partnerships, and managed by the National Park Service and the nonprofit Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

“My family was supportive of my decision to go,” Shock said. “I told them my first semester of my senior year in college. It took some time for my mother to come around, but she did. She’s grown used to me doing crazy things. I spent three months living in South America during my sophomore year of college.” Some people try to walk the entire 2,174 mile trail over several months. Others simply enjoy day-trips to parts of the AT.

The brothers, Jamie and Zachary Gumm, 23 and 20, respectively, who were left bruised and bloodied, live in Iowa and are uncertain if they will be able to travel back to Washington County for court proceedings, prosecutors said Monday during a bond hearing for one of the three men accused.

“The committee will determine an initial slate of nominees,” said Foster, who added the deadline for the initial nominations is March 31. The selection criteria call for any person who has made a major contribution to the Appalachian Trail, or has advanced the cause of the trail. The Appalachian Trail Museum board of directors will make final selections.
