Barrow County Schools

Barrow County Schools will also be closed, and the scheduled Board of Education meeting has been canceled. With several inches of snow and ice on the ground and forecasts calling for freezing rain Monday night, officials advised people to stay off the roads unless they absolutely have to drive and to call ahead if they go anywhere. The clean-up of local roads is under way, but Barrow County Schools and the Barrow County government will both remain closed Wednesday.

The school system announced its third successive snow day on its web site and also announced that the delayed Board of Education meeting will be Jan. 18. Barrow County Commission Chairman Danny Yearwood told the Barrow Journal this afternoon that the only employees he plans to ask to come to work tomorrow are department managers, directors or elected officials who did not finish entering their employees’ time into the county’s payroll system before leaving work last Friday.

In the four counties served by Mainstreet Newspapers (Jackson, Barrow, Banks and Madison counties), plus nearby Oconee County for balance, the most efficient school system in spending per student is the Jefferson City School System, which in FY2010 spent $7,169 per student. That is among schools with the lowest spending per student in the state.

We have crews out right now from the school system and the county clearing a place at each school for faculty/staff to park and a single entrance to be used for entering the building. Our maintenance crews will begin again in the morning at 6:00 AM.
