The Phantom of the Opera musical is now the longest running Broadway show in history, and one of the most lucrative entertainment enterprises of all time. The 69-year-old will star as the Wizard alongside Danielle Hope – who won BBC1′s Over The Rainbow to land the role of Dorothy.

Licensing to stage Phantom was just opened to high schools this summer. This weekend, Traverse City West Senior High School will be the first high school in Michigan to take it on. Everything from classroom aides to math and reading coaches to teachers to performing arts would be eliminated or cut considerably under the budget proposal made public last weekend, as the district tries to make up for a $14 million deficit.

Michael was the first to play the Phantom Of The Opera in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical. Sophomore Marika Countouris and junior Monica Buzzard are both playing the role of Christine. They said they find the kissing the most challenging part about their role. It’s not unusual for a high school to stage a big musical. But for a high school to stage Andrew Lloyd Webber’s large-scale Phantom of the Opera is a different story.
